Indian Exports And British Imports:

The British and the Indians go back a long way. With Britain establishing its colonial rule in India, both cultures had a symbiotic relationship to a certain extent. The period from the 1870s to the 1920s saw illustrious names like Dadabhai Naoroji, Cornelia Sorabji and Rabindranath Tagore making pertinent contributions to British life and culture.

These scholars, migrants and visitors to Britain not only left an impact on British life and culture but went on to influence the mind of colonial India. The legacy that these individuals left has glimpses in the present Indian education, society, culture, economy and other areas.

Oxford was the seat of learning most South Asians fixed their gazes toward during this period. By 1922, there were around 150 Indian students who had attended this university.

Indians today are widening their horizons to include British universities offering more diverse programs. India forms the second largest source of overseas students pouring into Britain for higher education after China, with nearly 16,000 students filtering in between 2005-06 alone.

For these students the field of business and administration is among some of the more popular education options and is closely followed by engineering and technology. The UK is openly embracing this influx of talent as overseas students are major contributors to the economy and the academics besides being beneficial to its cultural life.
